This book is an important genealogy and family
history of Nicklaus Fast (1727-1818) and many of his descendants.
It provides a history of Nicklaus Fast after his arrival in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania on August 15, 1750 from Germany, until his death in 1818. Although some information is dedicated to his daughters, most additional chapters are devoted to his four surviving sons, and their descendants - John Adam (1756-1839), John Jacob (1758-1827), Francis (1760-1831), and Christian Fast (1762-1841). Mr. Faust also provides four accompanying chapters he calls "a partial list of descendants", where he shows the direct genealogical line back to Nicklaus Fast for each documented descendant. "By Way of Rotterdam" has been printed at least four times - 1952, 1976, 1979, and 1983. It is just under 500 pages in length, and may contain an accompanying index of names as found in the book. The author acquired his interest in genealogy from his father, Jonathan Wesley Fast (1841-1940). After service in the Civil War, he attended the West Virginia Agricultural College at Morgantown, West Virginia. As a result of his genealogical research while a student at college, Jonathan Wesley changed his name from Fast to Faust, insisting Faust to be the original spelling. For more information about how some descendants of Nicklaus Fast changed their surname from Fast to Faust, see "From Fast to Faust" (Chapter 7) of "Nicklaus Fast of Göcklingen, Germany", 1994, by Robert G. Fast. |
